Back to Their Land: Indonesia's Paper Industry vs. Indigenous Groups
Back to Their Land: Indonesia's Paper Industry vs. Indigenous Groups
Indonesia is home to a rapidly expanding pulp and paper industry. The industry's pursuit of land is increasingly bringing it into conflict with Indigenous groups who have lived and farmed in the country's tropical rainforests for generations. A combination of government support, unclear land borders and murky regulations have allowed companies like Asia Pulp and Paper and APRIL to move into traditional ancestral lands and convert them into monoculture tree plantations. In the process, indigenous communities are evicted- often by force- from their lands. The recent creation of an arbitration process in the country and untested industry promises to resolve land claims are empowering groups like the Koto Sebelimbing of Sumatra in efforts to reclaim their land. Produced by Emily Bodenberg and Heather Roy This video is part of a year-long investigation into the roots of global illegal logging and the role of consumer demand for cheap wood products. Reporting was conducted by a team of 10 journalism students in the International Reporting Program at UBC's Graduate School of Journalism in Vancouver. Two Team Project webinar - Breakthrough technologies for the pulp and paper industry
The CEPI Two Team Project identified the most promising breakthrough technologies to lower the carbon footprint of pulp and papermaking. As part of the CEPI 2050 Roadmap, this project resulted in eight very promising breakthrough concepts. They offer opportunities to create value, reduce costs, improve margins, radically change sector operations and allow massive decarbonisation. In this webinar, Marco Mensink, CEPI Deputy Director General and Bernard de Galembert, CEPI Forest and Innovation Director presented the the winning concepts, answering participant questions. French Toilet Paper Commercial With Tablet & Emma
A funny French toilet paper commercial surfaced recently with a man disgusted at his wife Emma for always using paper instead of the newest technology in the form of a tablet or iPad.
Sure, the paper industry is struggling, but there's one thing your tablet can't replace. Check out this hilarious French ad for Le Trefle and remember that technology can't replace everything!
